How to become a Freelance Photographer
The term photographer covers a multitude of different business types. You might be a portrait photographer, or a studio photographer working for a company which provides photographic services to business - or you might work on location, but again to a client’s requirements. On the other hand, you could take shots and then sell them online. Or you might be a photo-journalist, or even a member of the paparazzi! Whichever option you choose, there is always the option to go freelance – as many photographers do.
Becoming a freelance photographer is quite straightforward, and probably easier than for many other types of freelancer. The key difference in how you set up your business will be whether you want to invest in your own studio to do commissioned work, or whether you are just aiming to sell the shots that you take. In which case, all you really need is a website and lots of good contacts!
The other thing to consider is whether you want to take the plunge and give up full time employment, or whether you want to try freelancing on the side in the early days, until you are more sure of the business opportunity.
