JD – IT Environment Manager

The purpose of this job is to:

Ensure the Production & Non-Production Environments (Development, Test, UAT, NFT Environments) are properly understood, managed (governed & coordinated) and fit for usage by the relevant SDLC teams (development teams, test teams and the broader IT project). The role will develop the environment management capabilities in line with UK strategy and IT capability.

Accountabilities & Activities:

The key accountabilities and activities of the role are:

· Develop, document and socialise current Demand Management process of allocating environments in an efficient way, ensuring there is appropriate capacity and availability to support projects, operational testing, development and maintenance activities

· Verify environment components and relationships, recording underpinning configuration items within the CMDB

· Verify environment adherence to security standards and that these standards are maintained in conjunction with policy

· Ensure the environments are monitored ensuring the health of the environment is maintained and ready for its intended use

· Track all releases, upgrades and changes to the development and test environments in relation to environment management practices

· Take ownership of environmental defects ensuring these are logged and managed through to a successful resolution within the ITSM framework (ITIL)

· Ensure the environment remains efficient and effective, reusing or decommission of environments when testing has been completed

· Coordinate test environment configuration, deployment and provide support for test activities required to provide a stable test platform

· Develop and document process to track environments required for each stage of the SDLC

· Create short-term plans to deliver environments to support sprint-based development

· Coordinate activities of release engineers to automate the setup and configuration of test environments

· Communicate test environment availability to project management and quality assurance

· Develop KPIs to track efficacy of test environment delivery efforts

· Resolve conflicts between teams competing for limited testing resources

· Move test environment activities toward a goal of 100% automation

· Provide effort and cost estimates for onboarding of new projects to test environments

· Design and develop processes to support continuous delivery and adapt test environment management to support on-demand, self-service automation

· Forecast environment requirements and cost based on anticipated future demand from multiple application development teams

· Input into the analysis and on-going development of the performance management and monitoring tools used across environments to provide clear business and efficiency benefits

· Develop spend control reporting dashboard and usage metrics

Qualifications / Training / Experience:

· Minimum of 5 years' experience in deploying, architecting and implementing environments as a Technical Project Manager OR Senior DevOps with proven Project Management experience

· Qualified in Project Management methodologies (Agile/Prince2)

· Broad exposure to technologies for on premise and cloud platforms

§ Platforms – Azure, AWS

§ OS – Windows, Linux

§ Application – .NET, Tomcat/Apache, Java, IIS, JBOSS

§ Scripting – Perl, Shell, Python

§ Database – Oracle, SQL Server, MongoDB, MySQL

· Excellent background of Operating Systems infrastructure technologies and application containers

· Experienced in the use of industry standard enterprise deployment architecture frameworks

· Knowledge of distributed version control/software configuration management toolsets

· Performance monitoring and troubleshooting toolsets

· Background, understanding and aptitude in the architecting and deployment of digital enterprise solutions across a large disparate infrastructure

· Knowledge of distributed version control/software configuration management toolsets

· Highly focussed on providing a quality service and a dedicated self-starter who can work on their own initiative

· Demonstrable experience of continuous self-development and understanding of both current and future technologies

· Ability to demonstrate innovative thinking and have the broad knowledge and commercial aptitude within this specialist area

· Ability to build relationships quickly from both a professional and credible platform across project management, development and engineering teams

· A focus on scheduling accuracy with the ability to keep a constantly shifting environment calendar up to date

· Good interpersonal skills with a clear, concise and relevant communication style, including excellent presentational skills

· Drive and enthusiasm, a 'can do' attitude and commercial focus

· Focus on organisation and communication over technology

· Ability to estimate work effort and costs associated to bring test environments to readiness

· Experience of automation and orchestration tool chains
